Modeling vertical and horizontal flows of carbon dioxide between a raised bogs and the atmosphere

Bogs play a significant role in the formation of local and regional weather and climatic conditions, affecting the radiation, heat, water and carbon balance of the earth's surface. A wide range of experimental methods and model approaches of varying degrees of complexity and scale are used to monitor CO2 fluxes and describe its transport in the atmosphere. Recently, researchers have been particularly interested in a quantitative assessment of the impact of horizontal heterogeneity of vegetation cover and topography on greenhouse gas fluxes on a local and regional scale. This is necessary for a more accurate assessment of the contribution of vegetation to the integral fluxes of greenhouse gases over an inhomogeneous underlying surface, as well as for the interpretation of the measured flux data and the assessment of possible errors of these measurements. Within the framework of this study, a three-dimensional model of the transport of greenhouse gases in the surface layer of the atmosphere between the heterogeneous underlying surface and the atmosphere was developed. The model contains a dynamic part for the velocity components based on the “one and a half” closure of the system of averaged continuity and Navier-Stokes equations taking into account the resistance of vegetation, as well as a “biological” part, which includes the diffusion-advection equation for CO2 concentration, parameterization of the photosynthesis rate, and also the respiration of vegetation and soil. Using this model, the spatial heterogeneity of carbon dioxide fluxes was determined for the "Staroselsky mokh" raised forest bog (Tver region) selected as an object of study, and the representativeness of measurements of greenhouse gas fluxes carried out in the swamp by the method of turbulent pulsations was estimated.
