Lomonosov Moscow State University:

Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics

MSU Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics

Over the 80 years of the existence of the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics of Moscow State University, more than 20 thousand highly skilled specialists in various fields of mathematics and mechanics have been trained within its walls; about 4 thousand of his graduates became candidates and doctors of sciences. A whole galaxy of outstanding scientists, associated with mechatics, has made a significant contribution to the development of the most important areas of mathematics and mechanics; they stood at the origins of the atomic project and astronautics.

Graduates of the faculty work in research institutes, at industrial enterprises and in banks, in laboratories and computer centers, in institutes, higher educational institutions, and schools. More than a third of graduates (about 140 people) go to graduate school annually and continue to do research work, the purpose of which is to prepare a dissertation, after which the applicant is awarded the degree of candidate of physical and mathematical sciences.

Faculty of Computational Mathematics and Cybernetics

Faculty of Computational Mathematics and CyberneticsThe Faculty of Computational Mathematics and Cybernetics (VMC) of Lomonosov Moscow State University is a leading training centre of Russia in the field of fundamental research on Applied Mathematics, Computing Technologies and Informatics. The high qualification of its staff and the combination of deep theoretical and practical experience ensures that our graduates are welcome to the leading scientific centers, industrial, commercial and other organizations.

Research computing center

Research computing centerRCC MSU consists of 20 research laboratories and two research and production units. In the implementation of research and development employed 60 researchers, including 1 academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, 3 corresponding members of the Russian Academy of Sciences, 26 doctors of sciences and professors, 32 candidates of sciences. Research work is supported by many grants from the Russian Federal Property Fund and Russian Science Foundation. RCC employees take part in the federal target program «Research and Development in Priority Directions for the Development of the Russian Science and Technology Complex for 2014–2020», and carry out research commissioned by state organizations.

Keldysh Institute of Applied Mathematics of RAS

Keldysh Institute of Applied Mathematics of RASThe Keldysh Institute of Applied Mathematics is a research institute specializing in computational mathematics. It was established to solve computational tasks related to government programs of nuclear and fusion energy, space research and missile technology. The Institute is a part of the Department of Mathematical Sciences of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The main direction of activity of the institute is the use of computer technology to solve complex scientific and technical issues of practical importance. Since 2016, development of mathematical and computational methods for biological research, as well as a direct solution to the problems of computational biology with the use of such methods, has also been included in the circle of scientific activities of the institute. The Keldysh Institute is a head investigator in a number of leading studies in applied mathematics. The results obtained by the Institute scientists have been recognized in Russia and abroad. At different times several research organisations such as the Computing Center, the Institute of Space Research, the Institute of Mathematical Modelling had sprung from the Keldysh Institute and become leading scientific centers of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

Marchuk Institute of Numerical Mathematics of RAS

Marchuk Institute of Numerical Mathematics of RASMarchuk Institute of Computational Mathematics is one of the institutes of the Department of Mathematical Sciences of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Specialists in the field of computational mathematics, atmospheric and ocean physics, and mathematical modeling in immunology and medicine work at the INM RAS; the institute has a unique opportunity to carry out fundamental and applied research of an interdisciplinary, synthetic nature. The main areas of scientific activity are

  • fundamental research in the field of computational mathematics, the development of effective methods for solving problems of mathematical physics, computational technologies for solving large problems, the theory of numerical methods of linear algebra, conjugate equations, parallel computing;
  • creating a mathematical theory of climate, numerical modeling of atmospheric and ocean circulation, building global climate models;
  • analysis and modeling of complex systems (environment, ecology, medicine, immunology, bioinformatics).
