Numerical modeling of the water balance of Russian river basins in the model of the active land layer of the INM RAS - MSU.

The goal is to improve the INM RAS-MSU model for realistic reproduction of the structure of the hydrological cycle of land in the temperate zone of Russia. The main task is to analyze and improve the model in terms of reproducing the water balance of river basins (evaporation values, river runoff and moisture storage) and its geographical structure (seasonal and regional spatial and temporal variability) by performing numerical experiments. The rivers of the north of the East European Plain were analyzed: the large basins of the Northern Dvina, Pechora, Mezen, Onega rivers, as well as the average area catchments (2-50 thousand km2) located within their boundaries.

As part of the preparation of numerical experiments, the work addresses the following issues: 1) evaluating the accuracy of precipitation in ERA5 reanalysis for use as an atmospheric forcing model, 2) evaluating the accuracy of GRACE satellite gravity data of moisture storage in the active land layer at spatial scales of medium-sized watersheds, 3) evaluating seasonal evaporation from the medium-sized watershed surface using ERA5 and GRACE data, 4) processing pulse measurements over terrestrial ecosystems FLUXNET data for comparison with the active land layer model parameterizations.

Successful modeling results were obtained a) for evaporation - by including updated data on land surface map and LAI sheet index into the model, b) for river runoff and moisture storage - by including into the model parameterizations of water infiltration into frozen soil, a number of processes in snow cover (liquid water in snow, dynamics of snow cover in forest, dynamics of land surface release from snow during spring melt), water movement in river network.
