Numerical modeling of turbulence in an urban environment in the presence of vegetation.

The dynamics of turbulent flows in the urban environment in the presence of vegetation was investigated using the LES model of the INM RAS. A series of calculations was carried out over urban surfaces with simplified geometry. Objects (“buildings”) were defined explicitly and the influence of vegetation (“trees”) on turbulent flow was taken into account parametrically. On the basis of statistical analysis of calculation results, characteristic regularities of vegetation influence on turbulent length scales, turbulent kinetic energy balance in the urban layer and aerodynamic drag force of objects were revealed. A new approach to the calculation of drag force in the presence of vegetation is proposed. The results of the data analysis are considered from the point of view of the prospects of parameterization of the detected effects in multilayer RANS models of the urban layer.
