Selection and preparation of soil hydrophysical characteristics for the land active layer model.

The development of climate and weather forecast models towards increasing spatial (vertical and horizontal) resolution leads to detailed reproduction of physical processes in all model blocks, which increases the requirements for spatial detailing of external parameters. In the block describing processes in the soil and at its surface (model of the active layer of the land), many external parameters reflecting the properties of soil, vegetation, water bodies, etc. are used. The accuracy of these parameters significantly determines the quality of the calculation of the corresponding state variables: for example, the parameters of the basic hydrophysical characteristic of the soil affect the soil moisture obtained in the model and, thus, the components of the water balance and carbon cycle in the active layer. The paper analyzes pedotransfer functions presented in the modern literature for the possibility of using them in the calculation of soil thermal and hydraulic parameters on the set of granulometric composition of the Earth's soils. An archive (A Global High‐Resolution Data Set of Soil Hydraulic and Thermal Properties for Land Surface Modeling) consisting of a global database of granulometric composition and hydrophysical characteristics calculated using various combinations of pedotransfer functions is considered. The methods of spatial aggregation and software packages for using the archive in the INMCM national Earth System Model, in particular, in the INM RAS-MSU TerM (Terrestrial Model) model of the active layer of land are described. The sensitivity of the TerM model to varying the vertical and horizontal resolution of the model is evaluated.
