Application of the retarded drainage model to reproduce the dynamics of carbon stocks in wetland ecosystems in Earth system models

157th meeting of the seminar

«Mathematical modeling of geophysical processes: direct and inverse problems»

The seminar is devoted to the consideration of various aspects of mathematical modeling of physical processes in the atmosphere, hydrosphere and active layer of land, associated with solving problems arising in the study of the problems of climate change and the natural environment.

APPLICATION OF THE RETARDED DRAINAGE MODEL TO REPRODUCE THE DYNAMICS OF CARBON STOCKS IN WETLAND ECOSYSTEMS IN EARTH SYSTEM MODELS.

Further development of the Earth system models assumes the possibility of reproducing the dynamics of carbon stocks in bog ecosystems. These ecosystems have been slowly removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere over the past millennia and, along with the ocean, will play a significant role in restoring the global carbon cycle once anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions have ended. The attention of listeners is offered a scheme for calculating the accumulation of carbon stocks in peat bogs, developed for inclusion in models of the Earth system of varying complexity. This scheme is based on the application of a delayed drainage model, which allows to take into account the unequal sensitivity to changes in the hydrological regime of those peat bogs that have already reached their growth limits and those that are still growing.

The seminar will be held in the form of a webinar on the Zoom platform.
