EDDY-RESOLVING MODELING OF THE SUBPOLAR GYRE OF THE NORTH ATLANTIC.

The work is devoted to improving the reproduction in ocean models of the characteristics and physical processes responsible for the variability of the North Atlantic Subpolar Gyre (SANC NA) and the Atlantic meridional circulation cell. The regional realistic eddy-resolving model of the SA NNATL12 (Northern North Atlantic 1/12°) eddy-resolving model was developed on the basis of the NEMO 4 dynamic core. The data of the new eddy-resolving ocean reanalysis GLORYS12 were used as lateral forcing and initialization data, and its advantages were demonstrated relative to statistically analyzed data sets that assimilate the same observational data. The conditions at the upper boundary are taken from the RAS-NAAD high-resolution atmospheric reconstruction presented at two resolutions, 77 and 14 km. The basic configuration of the model copes with the task of reproducing the SA SPC relatively well, however, it demonstrates the problems that are relevant for this region, according to the literature. Three blocks of schemes and parameterizations are introduced and tested: the scheme of the horizontal impulse advection, the description of the forcing function, and the vertical coordinate of the model. The conclusion about the improvement/deterioration of the model solution is made on the basis of comparison with observational data. The ability of the model to describe individual processes as a result of the tests performed is investigated. Physically based innovations improve the reproduction of processes in the SA SCS and are recommended for use in global models and reanalyses.
