INFLUENCE OF PERMANENT FROZEN ON LONG-TERM CHANGES IN THE WATER BALANCE OF ARCTIC WATER CAPACITIES CAUSED BY AIR TEMPERATURE CHANGE

The increase in the annual runoff of rivers in the Arctic basin over the past 50 years is on average twice as high as the increase in annual precipitation in the basins of these rivers. For the last fifteen years, attempts have been made in the literature to explain this discrepancy by the melting of permafrost due to an increase in air temperature in the Arctic basin. This report will consider numerical experiments carried out using the WaSiM water balance model on hypothetical small watersheds in the Arctic. The set up of experiments made it possible to evaluate how an increase in soil permeability (with an increase in its temperature) translates into an increase in runoff and a decrease in evapotranspiration. In addition, additional experiments were carried out to assess the sensitivity of water balance changes to topography and soil properties of the catchment area (with a fixed scenario of air temperature changes). Experimental results show that an increase in runoff (due to a decrease in evapotranspiration) on secular time scales occurs even in the absence of additional moisture (precipitation, massive ice, etc.).

Due to the self-isolation regime, the seminar will be held in the form of a webinar on the Zoom platform.
