Windblows in the forest zone of Russia caused by squalls and tornadoes: methods of identification, patterns of spatial and temporal distribution and conditions of occurrence.

Wind impact is one of the significant factors of forest cover disturbance, along with logging, fires, outbreaks of forest pests, etc. Until recently, estimates of the area, frequency of occurrence, and spatial distribution of windblows in the forest zone of Russia were of a generalized nature. But with the advent of open access satellite images of Landsat and Sentinel-2, data on windblows obtained on the basis of these images have become the most important source of information on cases of squalls and tornadoes not recorded by the observation network. The report will present a methodology for collecting and systematizing data on windblows from satellite images, as well as databases created on its basis on windblows in the forest zone of the European part of Russia for 1986-2020. and in the forest zone of Russia as a whole (from 2001 to the present). In total, they include information on more than 1400 windblows and the meteorological phenomena that caused them (squalls, tornadoes and non-convective events). On the basis of the data obtained, some interesting regularities in the conditions for the occurrence of squalls and tornadoes have been established. In particular, significant differences were confirmed in the conditions for the occurrence of squalls and tornadoes, which manifest themselves on the synoptic scale, in the properties of air masses, as well as in the features of mesoscale processes. Some results of numerical experiments with the WRF regional atmospheric model on the reproduction of strong squalls and tornadoes that caused large windblows in the forest zone of Russia will also be presented.
