Seminar «Supercomputer technologies in science, education and industry»

Seminar Leader: Sadovnichy V.A., academician, rector of Lomonosov Moscow State University

The seminar was organized on the basis of the Scientific and Educational Center «Supercomputer Technologies». The reports cover all aspects of the use of supercomputers, parallel computing systems and distributed data processing methods for solving large computational problems. The seminar has a pronounced interdisciplinary nature, however, the various nuances of using supercomputer technologies are of interest to researchers from various fields.

Computer simulation of electromagnetic wave fields in inhomogeneous media on parallel computing clusters «Chebyshev» and «Lomonosov»

The report presents the results of studies of the propagation of electromagnetic radiation in heterogeneous and random media, conducted during 2002-2020 using supercomputer computing systems of the Scientific Research Center of Moscow State University «Chebyshev» and «Lomonosov».

Research results are presented in a number of areas, including

  • theory of radiation transfer in scattering media;
  • remote sensing of vertical profiles of the atmosphere and ionosphere of the Earth and planets by radio occultation method;
  • interference-reflectometric altimetry of the water level in water bodies;
  • deep radar of celestial bodies from orbital and descent spacecraft;
  • optical microscopy technique of industrial nanotechnology products;
  • modeling the optical properties of nanostructured materials.

Supercomputer modeling in urban meteorology and climatology

The report examined examples of the application of the mesoscale regional atmospheric model COSMO and supercomputer technologies to solve various scientific and applied problems in the field of urban meteorology and climatology. In particular, the tasks of creating detailed archives of meteorological information with high spatial resolution (with steps of the calculation grid in the first kilometers - hundreds of meters) for urban areas, studying the influence of megacities on atmospheric processes, assessing climate measurements from the implementation of potential scenarios of city development and adaptation of cities are considered to climate change, numerical weather forecast for urban areas. The experience of solving the above problems on the «Lomonosov-2» of the Moscow State University and «Cray-XC40» of the MRC Roshydromet supercomputers is discussed.
