Automated identification, tracking, and classification of mesoscale atmospheric vortices in numerical modeling data.

Mesoscale atmospheric vortices are circulations ranging from 2 to 2000 km in size (according to the Orlanski scale). This range encompasses a wide variety of vortex types, the most extensively studied of which are tropical cyclones (TCs) and, to a lesser extent, polar mesocyclones (PMCs). The climatology of other vortex types within this scale remains largely *terra incognita*. Reconstructing the climatology of mesoscale vortices requires long-term, high-resolution datasets, the generation of which demands significant computational resources. However, the primary challenge lies in the lack of reliable tools for investigating such vortices.

In this work, we propose an approach to address this gap. We present a tool for developing a systematic climatology of various atmospheric vortex types, based on a universal, automated method for identification, tracking, and classification. The identification process employs the "Rortex" criterion for coherent vortex structures. We introduce a physically interpretable method for classifying mesoscale atmospheric vortices within a multidimensional space defined by dynamic, geometric, and thermodynamic characteristics.

The approach was tested on meso-α and meso-β scale vortices (200–2000 km) using data from non-hydrostatic numerical simulations at low (77 km), medium (14 km), and high (6 km) resolutions, as well as hydrostatic data from the ERA5 atmospheric reanalysis. The results were validated against independent datasets—including those for tropical cyclones in the North Atlantic and polar mesocyclones in the Arctic—as well as against a manually curated expert dataset of smaller-scale vortices. It is shown that TCs and PMCs occupy limited regions within the feature space of their characteristics, corresponding to different mechanisms of their development. The types of the other identified groups are discussed.
