ON THE TIME SCALE IN THE ELASTIC-VISCO-PLASTIC DYNAMICS OF SEA ICE

The stability of the numerical integration of the equations of sea ice dynamics of elastic-viscous-plastic rheology and its modifications is discussed. It is shown that acceptable dynamics is also obtained in the absence of convergence to exact solutions for viscous-plastic rheology, if the stability of the iterative solution is ensured. Practical recommendations are given on the choice of integration parameters and illustrations are given based on the solutions obtained for the Arctic on unstructured grids of 4.5 km and 1 km using the FESOM model.
